In his blog post “When minimal viable product doesn’t work” Seth Godin emphasizes the importance of product marketing but is confusing Minimal Viable Product (MVP) as a ‘programming’ concept rather than a business methodology. MVP as well as other lean start-up methodologies fundamentally assumes that certain elements of a new product or business will be wrong in the beginning. These methodologies also believe that customer feedback (direct and indirect) are key signals in evolving and developing the product roadmap and offering. Technology, programming and engineering are all methods to develop the product that makes the business work.

As Godin points out, marketing programs are key to developing the customer base and that often takes time. You need feedback loops from your customers to prioritize features and evolve your product. Businesses shouldn’t launch a product until it has the required features needed for success. And what is ultimately the ‘minimal viable product’ should be a business decision, not a programming or technology decision.

This year we stayed again and had another bad experience when the air conditioning broke, left a terrible smell in the room and then broke again and I never got my bill Emailed to me*. I thought it might be an interesting test to leverage the social media channel and see if it would yield different results than my efforts last year.

The Timeline
January 10th, 2011

Posted a short comment “@TIVegas #Fail” on twitter

@TIVegas contacted me and asked for details

I responded with the details of this event and last years problem

@TIVegas said they would look into the issues and asked me to interact with their support twitter account TIVegas_help

January 11th, 2011

Posted a short comment including @TIVegas and @TIvegas_help thanking them for reaching out

January 12th, 2011

Posted comment on twitter that @TIvegas has been silent

My colleague, on Twitter, inquired about my experience and I shared my experience

@TIVegas_help responded and apologized for the delay and asked for more details

Over the next few days I gave them more details and we had a few more exchanges. They responded with the following:

“As for the other issues you’ve listed after the fact on Twitter, we are looking into what we can do to make you a happy guest again.”

“We LOVE that kind of loyalty at TI, Rob – and hate when we let our guests down even a little bit. Please accept our sincere apology”

“And rest assured, your feedback has reached our upper management’s ears. We really hope to see you again next year!”

And for the last 10 days… silence.

Results
I don’t expect to hear back from @TIVegas and in the end their social media lip service doesn’t replace good old fashion customer service. Creating a new customer service channel online without the supporting structure to get results isn’t progress. Social media tools enable personal broadcasting of good and bad experiences and organizations need a strategy to respond effectively and in a timely manner that fits this medium.

*the billing system was down when I checked out and I left my Email address for them to send the bill but I never received it.
