In my previous job I used to hold a 15 minute daily huddle with my team. It was a great way to hear what everyone was going to do that day, make sure that we were working in alignment, and to nip any issues in the bud.
In my current position, I started using 'scrum' meetings as we approached the deadline for an important web site launch. I think the other people in the team thought I was being overly paranoid, but it was surprising how many issues we dealt with in those short meetings each day that may have blown up had we not had that regular communication channel open to us.
The daily huddle is not a 'scrum' meeting so-to-speak, but I couldn't imagine managing a team and not using them.
